WHAT IS
human trafficking?
Human trafficking is the exploitation of humans for purposes such as sexual and labor servitude where something of value is exchanged (money, food, housing, drugs, etc.) through the means of force, fraud or coercion.
Force, fraud or coercion does not need to be present for minors under 18**
Traffickers or Pimps seek to fulfill human needs that are being unmet in a target.
Though anyone can be exploited, the following groups are disproportionately victimized:
as well as: people of color, Indigenous communities, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and immigrants
Why does
trafficking exist?
Human trafficking exists because there is a demand for it. Exploitation persists because people continue to seek and pay for it. At its core, trafficking is driven by a market where individuals are treated as products to be bought and sold. Every act of solicitation fuels this system. Ending trafficking means addressing the demand that sustains it.
